The Wedding

The wedding (aka, lobster bake + dance party) will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 27th, 2011 at the Moffatt-Ladd House, in their gorgeous garden and restored barn. The Moffatt-Ladd, built in 1763, is located at 154 Market Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801 (right across the street from the Hilton Garden Inn).

Come ready to rip apart a lobster (have no fear, there will be veggie options), walk through the graveled garden and dance all night, so leave the tux and sky-high heels at home.

Travel Directions

DRIVING:

Portsmouth is a 1 hour drive from Boston and a 4-6 hour drive from New York City (ugh, depending on traffic). If you’re looking for a Portsmouth address to pop into your GPS or Google Maps, use our hotel: The Hilton Garden Inn, 100 High Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

FLYING

The closest airports are Boston Logan (BOS) and Manchester International (MHT). Renting a car is easy to take you from the airport to Portsmouth, but there’s also a bus that runs from Logan to Portsmouth. C&J Bus runs a regular shuttle from the airport to Portsmouth (it drops you off slightly out of town, so you’ll need to snag a ride or cab into the heart of downtown/to the hotel).

TRAIN

There are frequent Amtrak and Acela trains from all over the east coast to Boston South Station. C&J Bus also runs a regular shuttle from Boston South Station to Portsmouth (it drops you off slightly out of town, so you’ll need to snag a ride or cab into the heart of downtown/to the hotel).

BUS

C&J Bus just started a once daily direct bus service to/from NYC and Portsmouth (a massive improvement - normally you have to take a bus to Boston, then transfer to another bus to Portsmouth). Again, C&J drops you off slightly out of town, so you’ll need to snag a ride or cab into the heart of downtown/to the hotel.

Hotel Reservations

We’ve reserved a block of rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Portsmouth for a special rate of $199/night for the three nights around the wedding, Thursday 8/25, Friday 8/26 and Saturday 8/27 (to note, it’s a 2 night minimum for this rate). To make your reservation, please call 603-431-1499 and ask for the Osher-Yaun Wedding rate or go online to www.portsmouthdowntown.hgi.com and use the group code OYW.

We HIGHLY recommend you book your hotel as soon as possible, as they won’t be able to reserve room blocks for long - the sooner you book, the safer you are that there will be rooms at this rate :)

The hotel is located in the heart of Portsmouth - it’s easy to park your car there and spend the rest of the weekend on foot. It’s just a few blocks from great restaurants & bars on the water, shops & cafes - not to mention right across the street from the Moffatt Ladd House, where the wedding will take place.

If you prefer to use another chain’s hotel points, there’s also a Marriott Resident’s Inn and Sheraton less than a block from the Hilton.

Exploring Portsmouth

Portsmouth is an awesome city to explore on foot. And there are tons of adventures close by if you’re up for a drive. Here are some of our favorite spots to help with your exploring - all are walkable from the hotel, unless noted!

The Friendly Toast – Our favorite breakfast spot downtown (you can eat it all day) – fun vintage décor and plenty of veggie options too.

121 Congress St  Portsmouth, NH 03801

http://www.thefriendlytoast.net

Gilley’s – Late night, post-bar stop for burgers and fries served out of a converted 1912 horse drawn trolley.

175 Fleet St, Portsmouth, NH 03801

Jumpin’ Jay’s – A more upscale downtown eatery.  Good fresh seafood - reservations encouraged, but not always necessary.

150 Congress St. Portmsouth

The Ferry Landing – Super casual seafood (lots fried, some not) right on the river.  Also has a great - but very small - outdoor bar overlooking the Piscataqua River.  We recommend trying the boozy Jimmy Juice – delicious and dangerous!

10 Ceres Street, Portsmouth

Café Kilim – Our favorite coffee shop in Portmsouth.  A little out of downtown (jump in the car), but well worth it for the friendly Turkish atmosphere and amazing coffee.  Highly recommend the Turkish Blend.

163 Islington St Portsmouth

Press Room - Good mellow bar downtown with live music several nights a week.

77 Daniel Street Portsmouth

Coat of Arms - Good Portsmouth locals bar - British pub vibe just a block from the hotel.

174 Fleet St. Portsmouth.

Surf – Higher end new seafood spot – we haven’t had the chance to try it yet, but the views of the water are killer.

99 Bow Street, Portsmouth

Portsmouth Brewery – Local brewery with casual food for lunch or dinner.                                                                                                                                     56 Market Street, Portsmouth

Portsmouth Candle Company – Probably the most important downtown institution (only in a small part because it’s owned by Ari’s mom).

62 Congress St Portsmouth

Prescott ParkPortsmouth’s downtown park located on the Piscataqua River.  Gorgeous free gardens to wander around. Live music, plays and other events throughout the summer – a great spot to picnic or just lay around. http://www.prescottpark.org/calendars.cfm

Strawberry Banke – A living history museum downtown that’s a fully restored village – giving a sneak peak into New England life and architecture from the 17th to 20th centuries.

14 Hancock Street, Portsmouth

Beaches + Adventures Outside of Portsmouth

There are great places to explore if you’re up for a quick drive outside of Portsmouth!

Chauncey Creek – If you can’t get enough lobster at the wedding (or are craving a lobster roll) you’ve got to hit up Chauncey Creek.  On the way to Seapoint Beach, it’s situated on a coastal waterway at the end of a beautiful drive.

Find directions at http://www.chaunceycreek.com/Directions2.htm

Newburyport –A pretty waterside town with a central village for shopping. Erin’s partial to The Tannery, a small shopping center in a reclaimed tannery mill. Two great home design stores in there - Red Bird Trading Company and Wishbasket - and a sweet bookstore, Jaberwocky.

Kittery Outlets – Cheap shopping! Crate & Barrel, J. Crew, Bose outlets and more just north of Portsmouth. For a quick lunch break during shopping, Bob’s Clam Hut is where Ari began his first soul destroying job. Erin’s partial to the chowder, oysters and sandwiches at Robert’s, across the street.

There are amazing beaches close to Portsmouth if you’re up for a quick ride!

Rye Beach, Wallis Sands & Jenness State Beach – There is a strip of great sandy beaches on the ocean along Rte 1A in New Hampshire (about 15 minute drive).  Beaches stretch from the town of Rye (high end with gorgeous homes on the water) to Hampton (think Snookie from Jersey Shore).  You can pay for parking at Wallis Sands, Jenness Beach and a handful of other spots, or you can park for free nearby on the side of 1A. Beaches are free in New Hampshire. Also a great beach drive if you head out of Portsmouth and take a cruise down 1A (be warned of weekend traffic).

New Castle Commons – A short ride (past pretty neighborhoods) from Portsmouth, you’ll find this great small beach surrounded by a large grassy park.

301 Wentworth Road (Route 1-B)

Seapoint BeachOur favorite rocky beach in Kittery, Maine (the town just north of Portsmouth over the bridge).  It’s a locals beach, so you have park a decent walk from the beach or you’ll get a ticket (only locals get stickers to park close).
